Recently the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) released the results of the Grades 3 and 6 assessments of reading, writing and mathematics as well as the Grade 9 mathematics assessment and Grade 10 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). Results for students in the Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB) showed improvement across six of the eight measures, some increasing as much as 5% over the previous year.
When compared to the province, AMDSB students surpassed provincial averages in Grade 3 reading, writing and math, and Grade 6 math. Grade 6 reading and writing is slightly below the provincial average but achievement in those measures remains high. Although AMDSB is lower than the provincial average in Grade 9 math, AMDSB students had larger gains overall. For Grade 10 literacy, AMDSB closed the gap and is now at par with the province.
Literacy and numeracy are important because they are fundamental for lifelong learning, personal development, and active participation in society. CEO Graham Shantz said: “We are pleased with the 2025/2026 school year EQAO results as they validate the work of our staff and the professional development and support that we provide in order to support them.”
It is important to note that these results are just one of many assessment tools that schools and boards use to measure and support student achievement. In addition, this data represents a snapshot of time, and it is most useful when examined as long-term trends.

Next steps include a review of school-level information with our administrators so that they can incorporate the findings into their School Learning Plans. This, in the end, enables us to support each student, meet them where they are, and develop strategies to enable their success.
